 Job description: Join the editing team at the Assistive Technology and Accessibility Center (ATAC – atac.iu.edu) in their role of supporting students, faculty, and staff with disabilities to be successful at Indiana University. We work to make sure books, e-texts, and other course materials are accessible and usable for individuals with disabilities.

Successful candidates will learn about issues that determine a document’s accessibility, how to produce highly usable documents for readers with significant vision impairment, and how to convert inaccessible documents to an accessible format while supporting students in a higher education environment.

Note: For students who demonstrate outstanding editing skills, teamwork, and work ethic in this position, there will be an opportunity to be considered for a graduate assistantship position. The next open assistantship runs from August 2020 to May 2021, and includes tuition remission and a stipend.

Educational Background: Because we are often editing materials for advanced courses, we particularly interested in individuals with background in chemistry, foreign languages, law, accounting, linguistics, and/or mathematics (helpful, but not required).

Shift times: The ATAC’s normal office hours are M-F 8 AM – 6 PM. Must be able to work 10 hours a week during the ATAC’s office hours. The ideal candidate would work shifts of 2-4 hours.

Job responsibilities:

  • Learn and master the ATAC’s accessible document creation standards using Microsoft Word
  • Must be able to efficiently describe images, charts, and tables to a high standard of English language proficiency according to Diagram Center’s Image Description guidelines: (http://diagramcenter.org/table-of-contents-2.html)
  • Must be prepared to take on various roles such as processing PDFs, editing eText, describing images, and captioning/describing video.
  • Track work and organize tasks in an Excel spreadsheet

 Qualifications:

  • Graduate students preferred; Undergraduates with GPA of 3.0 or above welcome to apply
  • Excellent verbal and written (typed) English language communication skills
  • Efficient and detail oriented
  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications, particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Personable and enjoy working in a team environment
  • Able to work effectively and efficiently with a minimum of supervision
  • Available to work a minimum of two daytime shifts within the work week
